Guide To Non-Toxic Deodorant

Your deodorant may smell clean, but are the ingredients? Here's a healthy alternative..Deodorant can smell amazing but the ingredients can be dirty. Even if they're 'all natural' and 'organic'.

Here's why:


Ingredients to be mindful of:

Aloe Vera- Can cause burning, itching, eczema, rash, abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, nausea, can cause uterine contractions, miscarriage, phytoestrogenic (mimics estrogen).

Aluminum- Can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, can cause increased risk of bone diseases, althzeimers disease, kidney disease.

Arrowroot Powder-High in lead and heavy metals.

Baking Soda-Can cause burning or irritation for sensitive skin, kidney issues, respiratory issues, cardiac issues.

Cocoa Butter-Can contain low amounts of lead and heavy metals

Cornstarch-Corn is usually high in GMO's, and even if not, there is a chemical in it,

aflatoxin, a toxin that encourages cervical cancer.

Kaolin Clay- High in lead and heavy metals.

Parabens- Hormone disrupting can cause fertility issues, male and female reproductive issues, skin irritation and can interfere with healthy thyroid function.

Petroleum aka 'Mineral Oil'- Can cause reproductive issues, menstrual issues, miscarriage, birth defects, fetal toxicity, digestive issues, respiratory issues, cardiac issues, lung and throat infections, liver, kidney and bone marrow damage, reduced central nervous system functioning, digestive issues. High in parabens.

Petroleum also contains the following:

Nickel: which causes lung, nasal and sinus cancer.

Formaldehyde: can cause leukemia, cancer of nose and throat

1,3-Butadiene: Can cause blood and lymphatic cancers, and harm the reproductive system

Benzo(a)pyrene: Can cause lung cancer

Benzene: Can cause leukemia and harm the reproductive system

Propylene Glycol- Can worsen issues for people with liver or kidney issues, can cause dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, hair loss, skin irritation, itchiness.

Shea Butter-Can be high in heavy metals.

Tapioca Powder- High in lead and heavy metals.

Triclosan- Hormone disrupting, can cause infertility, reproductive issues, skin irritation and allergic reactions, causes developmental issues in animals, can cause antibiotic resistance, decreases beneficial bacteria in gut, can cause inflammatory issues.

Witch Hazel- Contains safrole, a cancer chemical. Can also cause skin dryness, and liver and kidney issues.


Essential Oils Castor Oil- Can cause uterine contractions and pregnancy issues, skin irritation and allergic contact dermatitis

Lavender Essential Oil- Can cause cancer, and highly estrogenic which can cause hormone imbalances.

Lime Essential Oil- Estrogenic, can cause uterine contractions

Sandalwood Essential Oil- Prologned exposure can cause kidney issues, can cause skin inflammation and itchiness

Bergamot Essential Oil- Contains bergapten, which can cause redness, swelling, blistering, and rashes when exposed to UV radiation. Not recommended for children and causes uterine contractions so not pregnancy safe. Can also cause inflammation and swelling,

Tea Tree Oil- Can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and respiratory issues. Hormone disrupting.

I couldn't find any deodorants without any of these ingredients. If anyone has any other product recommendations, drop a comment below and if it fits our criteria we can add it to the Wellness Database.


Because I couldn't find any with ingredients that felt safe, I decided to create my own recipe. I wanted to make something that is a:


Deodorant- Reduces underarm smell.

Antiperspirants- Reduces underarm sweat.


So here it is! :)


Antiperspirant Deodorant Recipe


Equipment:

  • 1 small pan

  • 1 large pan

  • 1 small jar

  • Stirring spoon

  • Measuring cups/spoons


Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut oil

  • 1 cup kokum butter

  • 1/4 cup organic xantham gum

  • 10-20 drops lemon essential oil

  • 10 tablespoons beesewax

  • (Optional) 10-20 drops grapefruit essential oil OR orange essential oil


Directions:

  1. Combine coconut oil, kokum butter, xantham gum, and beeswax in small pan.

  2. Fill a large pan halfway with water.

  3. Submerge smaller pan halfway into water. Heat on medium/high.

  4. Keep submerged and stir constantly until ingredients have dissolved.

  5. Once fully dissolved, dump the contents of the small pan into the small container.

  6. Add essential oils.

  7. Firmly seal jar with lid.

  8. Let cool halfway. Then stir and flip upside down.

  9. Let it finish cooling until solid.

  10. Enjoy! Shelf life last for up to 1 month.
